About this Event:

READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS

All students must FIRST complete either an approved online hunter education course or a home study course in order to participate in Hunter Safety Field Day class and to receive your Michigan Hunter Safety Certificate.

Both online and home study options are available through the Michigan DNR website. Please be aware that online courses are hosted by third-party vendors, and any associated fees are set by those vendors, not by the Michigan DNR. If you choose the online course, you must bring the certificate of completion with you. If you choose the home study option, you are required to pick up a student manual and complete all chapter reviews before attending the field day class, and the student manual must be brought to field day class with the chapter reviews completed. Those without completed reviews will not be allowed to partake in the field day class.

The manuals are provided at no cost and must be picked up at least seven (7) days prior to the field day class. Hunter Safety manuals will be available at the Luzerne Hardware starting July 28th at 2244 Deeter Rd, Luzerne, MI 48636, between the hours of 8AM - 5PM Monday-Friday, or Saturday 8AM - 4PM. All students must register online for the field day at least seven days in advance. Once registered, students can pick up their manual if they are doing the home study option.

The field day will take place at the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 162 in Luzerne, MI on Saturday, August 16th. American Legion is located at 3590 Legion Dr. in Luzerne, Michigan 48636. There will NOT be live shooting for this class. Simulation demonstration only.

Doors will open at 9:30 AM and class will begin promptly at 10:00 AM. The course runs approximately five hours with 10 minute breaks as needed. Students should plan to bring a pencil and pen along with their manual if they did the home study option. Drinks and snacks will be provided. Parents or guardians are encouraged to attend with youth participants to support their learning; however, they may not assist during testing.

For field day class we will review important topics from the manual including but not limited to safe firearm handling and carrying, ethics and outdoor safety guidelines. The exam is a written test and students must get an 80% to pass. Hunter Safety certificate distribution will occur after the test is completed and graded.

Students must participate respectfully, safely, and without disruption throughout the course. Instructors reserve the right to dismiss any student for unsafe or disruptive behavior. Students under 18 must have emergency contact information available. Disruptive students may be asked to leave, and if so, parents will be contacted immediately. We look forward to helping you become a safe, responsible, and knowledgeable Michigan hunter.

About the Program

Overview:

The main purpose of the hunter education field day course is to provide an alternative to the traditional course. This course is the same as the traditional hunter education course; however, the classroom portion is completed by either, online training or as a take home study format.
In order to purchase a hunting license in Michigan, an individual born on or after January 1, 1960, is required to successfully complete an approved hunter education course. There are two different formats for successfully completing the field day course. Students must take either, the online course or the take home study, then complete the field day in order to earn a hunter safety certificate. Students choosing the online course followed by the field day must present a copy of their certificate of completion (voucher) of the online course at the start of the field day.  The certificate of completion (voucher) of the online course is valid for 12 months from the completion date.  The online course is fee based and can be taken at https://www.hunter-ed.com/michigan/. The second format is take home study. Students register for the field day and pick up the student manual, a minimum of one week prior to the field day. Take home study students must complete the chapter review questions and present them at the start of the field day. Michigan’s hunter education course is taught by a dedicated core of certified volunteer instructors and Michigan conservation officers.
