About this Event:

Michigan Law requires:

1. Individuals born on or after July 1, 1996, shall not operate a motorboat that is powered by a motor or motors totaling more than 6 horsepower on the waters of this state unless the person has been issued a boater safety certificate

2. Individuals born after December 31, 1978, shall not operate a personal watercraft upon the waters of this state unless he or she first obtains a boating safety certificate.

Anyone without a driver's license must bring your birth certificate and/or copy of with you to verify birthdate. This class is free. Bring your own lunch, drinks, and snacks for the day. Let us know if you have any special needs/requests; such as needing the test read to you or any medical conditions we should need to know about. Any student under the age of 16 will need to be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian, or adult approved by parent.

About the Program

Overview:

The main purpose of the boater safety education course is to train knowledgeable, safe and responsible boaters. Topics covered include general boating and water safety, navigational rules, causes and prevention of crashes, operation and fueling techniques, environmental concerns and reporting responsibility. 
Any motorized boat operator born after June 30, 1996, is required by law to pass an approved boater safety course and to carry a boater safety certificate. In addition, boater education is also required for all PWC operators born after December 31, 1978. Michigan’s boater education course is taught by a dedicated core of certified volunteer instructors, sheriff’s deputies and Michigan conservation officers. 

About the Class: 
  • In person, traditional classroom setting 
  • Written test (80% or better to pass) 
  • No minimum age requirement; however, students under 10 years of age shall be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian or other adult approved by parent or legal guardian.
