Showing up at 8:30 am is optional…but look at the paragraph above to see what you’re missing. If you show up at noon you can still get the basic requirements to obtain a Hunter Safety Certificate. You will be tested for your skills at handling a firearm, meet a Michigan Conservation Officer, and take a written test. Whether you show up at 8:30 am or noon, you need to stay until 5pm to be eligible to get your Hunter Safety certificate.
This FREE Hunter Safety Field Day course is likely the best in the State! You will enjoy the “round robin” experience of traveling from station to station with several certified instructors to give you much “hands on” instruction. Either the home study course or the online course must be taken prior to attending our Field Day.
If you opt for the home study course, you can pick up your free workbook no sooner than Oct. 20th in the lobby of the Genesee County Parks Administration Building, located at 5045 Stanley Rd, Flint, MI 48506 during the business hours of 8am-4pm Monday-Friday. Please do not call the Parks Administration Office about the course details or registration. They are merely and generously allowing us the use of their lobby for the student home study manual pick up and use of their Crossroads Village warehouse for the Field Day location. There is no need to talk to the staff; the box of student manuals is located in the lobby. You must answer the quiz at the back of the manual and bring the manual and quiz with you when you come for the Field Day.
If you opt for the Kalkomey online course, you must pay a fee (about $30) to receive the course and get a completion certificate. Print the certificate or get an image of the certificate and bring it with you to our Field Day.
If you show up at 8:30 a.m. bring a sack lunch. Lunch is from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. You may bring your lunch inside in the morning and leave it on the table at your chair. There aren’t any restaurants on the premises. You can have someone bring you a hot lunch to the warehouse. Have them follow the same signs you did. Your presence is required in the warehouse as a “learning lunch” because this is when the Conservation Officer comes to give a presentation and answer any questions you may have.
If you opt to come in at noon you do not have to bring a lunch, but you may.
Be aware of the weather forecast because, rain or shine, most of the stations are outdoors. Dressing for the weather is essential because when you get cold it’s not fun anymore and we want you to have the best learning experience! You might want to consider what footwear you’re wearing, too. Tennis shoes get wet quick in the grass if it rains or even if it’s a fall dew or frost.
Have someone at least 18 years old accompany you to the warehouse door to sign a waiver/declaration/responsibility form if you are under 18 years old. They can then leave. If you are 12 or under, your adult must stay all day. Your accompanying adult does not need to register if they are not taking the course for a Hunter Safety certificate. Bring a pencil.
Workers will be tearing down the Halloween decorations and putting up Christmas decorations in the Village. As you walk to/from the warehouse, do not walk under or near any equipment whether it is operating or not. Do not bring any firearms or ammunition. Let us know if you have any special needs. Call Kalkomey if you have any questions.
VERY IMPORTANT: Be a good citizen and PLEASE be sure to remove your name if you signed up and then cannot attend. This will allow someone on the waiting list to take your place in this awesome opportunity which has limited seats.
We look forward to assisting you to become a safe and responsible hunter. It’ll be so much fun…the only thing missing is a gun raffle!

About the Program
Overview:
The main purpose of the hunter education field day course is to provide an alternative to the traditional course. This course is the same as the traditional hunter education course; however, the classroom portion is completed by either, online training or as a take home study format.
How do I register my child for a class if they do not have an email address? It is very common that the student looking to register for a class does not have an email of their own. To solve this predicament, we created a process called "Linking Accounts". By creating an account of your own and "linking" the student to that account, you now have the option to sign them up for a class with your own email. All communication about the event will be sent over to you making it easy to keep track of things. Steps to create a linked account.

In order to purchase a hunting license in Michigan, an individual born on or after January 1, 1960, is required to successfully complete an approved hunter education course. There are two different formats for successfully completing the field day course. Students must take either, the online course or the take home study, then complete the field day in order to earn a hunter safety certificate. Students choosing the online course followed by the field day must present a copy of their certificate of completion (voucher) of the online course at the start of the field day. The certificate of completion (voucher) of the online course is valid for 12 months from the completion date. The online course is fee based and can be taken at https://www.hunter-ed.com/michigan/. The second format is take home study. Students register for the field day and pick up the student manual, a minimum of one week prior to the field day. Take home study students must complete the chapter review questions and present them at the start of the field day. Michigan’s hunter education course is taught by a dedicated core of certified volunteer instructors and Michigan conservation officers.
