Event Description:

Watkins Lake State Park & County Preserve is a popular watchable wildlife destination and features beautiful rolling land covered in a mixture of open meadows, mixed hardwoods, low wetland areas, open water, and the property’s most popular feature, Watkins Lake.  Join Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources by collecting native seeds to plant in the bare land where invasive shrubs have been removed. Volunteer work will enhance the work being done to open up the Oak Forest and Prairie transition.

Where: Meet at the parking lot. We will walk about 10 minutes to the site.
GPS/ Map Coordinates: 42.129782, -84.1379695

What to Wear and Bring: Please dress for outdoor work, wearing long pants, long-sleeve shirt, work boots, and sun protection. Bring layers to dress for the weather. Bring water, a snack, and any medication you might need. To prevent the spread of invasive species, ensure all gear is free of mud and seeds. Work gloves, eye protection, and hand tools are provided.

More about the Volunteer Stewardship Program: Volunteer stewardship workdays with the DNR engage volunteers through hands-on restoration and education as they help remove invasive plants threatening high-quality ecosystems in state parks across southern lower Michigan. Volunteers learn plant identification, see rare ecosystems, connect with others and more. No experience is necessary and equipment and instruction are provided.
